Explored this beautiful mountain lake mid-morning and had the whole place to ourselves. Convict Lake got its peculiar name from the incident in 1871 where a bunch of prisoners escaped and found themselves here (what a sight!) There were posses involved, and after a shoot-out a good ole Wells Fargo agent who had been passing through was killed. They honored him by naming the mountain you see, Mount Morrison, in his name. Interesting story for a beautiful place tucked in the Eastern Sierras.
