MAKAPU'U TIDEPOOLS

Makapuu, HI

Activity: Makapu'u Tidepools Hike // Location: Waimanalo, HI // Duration: 1 hr. each way

Remember that one time I went to that beautiful lighthouse? Well, this is the same location! You park yourself in the parking lot at the bottom of the hill, then walk up about a mile or less this paved, windy, and uphill road. Beware it can be really toasty so bring some water and perhaps a small snack. Once you get about 3/4 of the way to the lighthouse, you will see a whale sign. Turn right. That is where you begin the trek down this rocky mountain side pictured above. To get down it will take you about 15-30 minutes depending on your pace.

It's a beautiful sight to see the waves crashing on the shoreline and aqua blue waters. They were so clear we could see people swimming underwater from hundreds of feet above. The tidepools themselves were about 6-10 ft. in some places, but overall around 3-5 ft deep and pretty shallow. Definitely swim worthy and even jumping in worthy in some areas. The water is warm and clear and has some pretty fish, so don't forget your go-pro or underwater camera! Have fun!
