Between the constant sunny weather, bustling arts & entertainment scene and generally laid-back attitude, it's no wonder why San Diego is one of the top travel destinations in California. It's next to impossible to experience all that San Diego has to offer in a single trip, which is just one more reason to put in the proper amount of planning before you leave.

This fair-sized city with a small-town feel makes for a great getaway, but you've got to have everything in order if you want to get the most out of your trip. San Diego may be family-friendly, but there's no reason why you can't take full advantage of the nightlife and cut loose with the following travel tips.

Visit the Zoo
If San Diego is known for any single attraction, it's likely the city's zoo. The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is one of the most well-known in the world and is home to over 3,700 animals. First-time visitors typically have a hard time believing just how impressive the zoo is, as there are over 650 species and subspecies of animals to view on a plot of close to 100 acres.

A day at the San Diego zoo can certainly be expensive, though, especially if you bring the whole family. For best results, look for group discounts or other special rates that might apply beforwe visiting the zoo.

Take in the Local Cuisine
After a hot day at the zoo, there's nothing better than sitting down to a fine meal. San Diego is home to some of the country's best restaurants, the lot of which cover practically every style of cuisine imaginable. Mexican food and seafood are both heavily represented in San Diego, but BBQ lovers will gush over the food at Phil's BBQ, and sushi fans will have a hard time finding a better place to eat than Sush Ota.

If you're on a budget, stay away from the tourist traps and eat where the locals do. It can also be helpful to look to websites such as when trying to find a restaurant to eat at in San Diego, as user reviews can be very informative, especially if you're looking to try a spot you've never been to before.

Save a Few Dollars Wherever Possible
Like most cities in America, San Diego can be somewhat expensive to travel to, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the area. Taking steps to save money while on vacation can help you to better enjoy your trip, and it's easier than you might think. When choosing a hotel, for example, avoid the beaches, as prices can be extravagant in these areas. Instead, focus on staying downtown, which tends to be far less expensive.

While you're downtown, sign up for a ground transportation package with Ace Parking or an equivalent parking facility. Use your car for day trips to outlying areas, but for daily in-city tourist activities take the bus. By using San Diego's underrated public transportation, you'll save money on travel costs and spare yourself the incredible headache of dealing with the city's complex freeways and beach traffic.
So, good news: a trip to San Diego can be a blast when planned properly, and you don't have to break the bank in order to pull it off!

  4. I loved San Diego - probably one of my favorite California cities. Balboa Park/SD Zoo are amazing - seriously the biggest zoo I've ever been to. Sea World was also awesome. And, it's so close to La Jolla, and you really can't go to SD without making a day stop there to check out the beach, shops and animal life! Ahhh I miss it already!
