VERSAILLES

Destination: Palace of Versailles / Entrance: 15 euros each

Oh my, Versailles was beautiful even in the dead of winter. Versailles is a suburb of Paris and famous for the beautiful home of King Louis and his family. The gardens are just as beautiful as the palace, and you can easily spend all day surrounded by trees, statues and fountains. In the summer it is much more lively, but in the winter there is something mysterious and peaceful in the air that makes it special.

You enter the palace through the golden gates and are free to explore the gardens or pay to enter the castle. Every ceiling is painted and every room highly decorated. We even got hand held walky talkies for personal tour guides. The fireplaces were big enough for logs, the King and Queen quarters were quite fancy, and you may have learned about the hall of mirrors in humanities- the most remarkable feature of the Palace of Versailles.

People back then knew how to throw a classy party. You wouldn't expect anything less from a King's palace. It was definitely worth gawking at and learning a few things along the way. What I love about France is how every little thing has meaning and a story behind it. Versailles is definitely a part of that story.

  11. Cool photos, Meg! We got a *little* tired of ANOTHER fancily decorated room, but some of it is just amazing. And outside is gorgeous. Like you guys, we wished it were all green and in full bloom, but still pretty amazing.

  12. Personally I love how it was Americans who fund-raised the money to fix up Versailles. When I was there the hall was not that sparkly.
Glad you had a great time!
