Homemade Spicy Tuna Roll

In Japan, sushi means "sour tasting". Sushi is originally made with cooked vinegar rice and raw fish, both low in fat and high in protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. There are many different ways to make sushi, each with their own nutritional benefits.

Today I am going to teach you how to make healthy sushi easily at home. Since spicy tuna is one of my favorites, I couldn't resist. But keep in mind you can substitute whatever you want with sushi, that is what makes it so fun!

Ingredients for Sushi Roll:

*This recipe is good for two tuna rolls 

2 sheets of Nori (edible seaweed)
1 cup jasmine rice
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 small tuna steak, 1/3-1/2 lb.
1/2 avocado (or cucumber)
Mini carrots (optional-around 5)
Sesame seeds
Sriracha sauce
Sushi mat

Directions for Sushi Roll: 
  1. Cook 1 cup of jasmine rice (or japanese short grain) in two cups water 
  2. In a large dish, mix chopped raw tuna steak with 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce and 1 tablespoon wasabi
  3. Take 1/2 cup of cooked rice and spread on a nori sheet, leaving around 1" on one of the long sides blank
  4. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top of rice
  5. Add spicy tuna, avacado and carrots about 1.5" from the side where rice hits the edge
  6. Begin rolling from the side where the rice hits the edge, with help of the sushi mat
  7. Once rolled nicely, get a sharp knife and cut accordingly (make sure your knife is really sharp, or wet it in a glass of water before slicing to ensure clean cuts)

    Find a helpful sushi mat at any local grocery store for under $2!

    Sushi Dipping Sauce:

    *Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl

    1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
    1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1/3 cup rice vinegar
    2 tablespoons sugar
    1 teaspoon wasabi
    1 tablespoon Sriracha hot sauce
    1/2 tablespoon corn starch

    This sauce adds the perfect kick of spice to the sushi. So good! Can also dip in soy sauce with wasabi.
